About this time of year all of New Orleans fixes their eyes on the tropics. Specifically 4,665.86 miles to the coast of Africa where the winds from the Sahara desert blow into the Atlantic Ocean and stir up large squalls...which become tropical storms...which become hurricanes!
It doesn't matter what job you have, your political beliefs, your social status- in August in New Orleans everyone can pull together for one common goal:
EVACUATION.
And if we're not preparing for it in August- we're talking about when we did it in the past. How it took us 6 hours to get from New Orleans to Mandeville. How you fit 6 kids, four adults, 1 grandmother, 2 cats, and 3 dogs into 2 hotel rooms for 5 days. How long our electricity was out, how long it took us to get back in and the biggest question-
WILL YOU LEAVE AGAIN?
You know you're from South Louisiana when a selling point for your home is that you've already got all the boards for your windows pre-cut.
When the weather is the news segment that people gather around and sigh, "Thank God that tropical storm Ana broke up in the gulf."
When the kids in kindergarten at school put on a play entitled "Evacuation Vacation." (no lie.)
When you've experienced and can explain "contra-flow"
It's all about the WEATHER.
